Mentoring

Mentoring has been growing in popularity since the 1970s, with the majority of the top 100 companies now offering it to their staff. As part of New Wave’s continuing commitment to developing young professionals and creating positive change, this mentoring guide has been put together to help you identify a potential mentor/mentee and offers some guidance on developing a successful mentoring partnership.

Mentoring need not be a once in a lifetime experience. At different points in your career you will need a different type of support. The benefits of mentoring to someone just leaving university or taking their first career break are well known, but whatever stage they are at, all members are likely to find this support invaluable and highly rewarding.

New Wave is very flexible in its definition of mentoring, but there is one rule: Your mentor should never be your line manager, and your mentee should never be one of your own staff. The reason for this is that there may be a conflict of interest should the mentee wish to discuss career moves or if they experience communication problems with you.

Download the NewWave booklet which aims to define and remind you of the benefits of mentoring. In addition it includes information to educate new, and refresh the skills of more experienced, mentors. Throughout the text, those members looking for or working with a mentor are referred to as ‘mentees’.
